What is eZ-Screenshot?

eZ-Screenshot allows it’s users to take and save screenshots the fast way. Users of MacOS might know the handy built-in screenshot feature (press Cmd + Shift + 3). On older Windows systems you’ll have to hit Print-Screen and paste the image into a image editing program and save it. On newer versions the Snippet-Tool is available.

However eZ-Screenshot allows you to use the shortcuts described in the following section to quickly take and store screenshots without even having to click twice.

Using shortcuts

These shortcuts currently are only available on Windows!

Shortcut Function
Ctrl + Shift + F3 Take a screenshot of a specific region of the screen.
Ctrl + Shift + F4  Take a quick screenshot of the entire screen.
Ctrl + Shift + F5 Close the background-service.
Ctrl + Shift + F6 Display this help page.

How does eZ-Screenshot work?

If you don’t have windows, execute the standalone jar-file and ignore the shortcuts. They are only supported on Windows systems for now.

Take a screenshot of a specific region of the screen

By using the combination Ctrl + Shift + F3 or executing the standalone jar-file you’ll notice that your screen fades into a slightly lighter color. This indicates, that you are in the region-selection mode. You might have also noticed that your cursor turned into a crosshair.

So your screen looks like this usually:

ez-screen-1

After entering the region-selection mode, your screen will look something like this:

ez-screen-2

Now you can hold down the left mouse button and draw a rectangle on the screen. After releasing the mouse button, the screen’s contents within this rectangle will be saved as a screenshot on your desktop. The following video shows this process on a computer running Windows 10:

To exit the region-selection mode without saving the image, press the escape key while selecting a region or click anywhere without selecting a region.

Take a screenshot of the entire screen

On Windows you can hit Ctrl + Shift + F4. This will save a screenshot of your entire screen on your desktop.

End the service

On Windows, there is a service running in the background without any graphical user-interface. This service listens for the combinations listed above. If you want to end this service, you can use Ctrl + Shift + F5. The service will notify you, that it’s going to end now:

Display the manual

By using the keys Ctrl + Shift + F6 in combination on a Windows computer, eZ-Screenshot is going to display this manual in your default web-browser.
